My Durban July Weekend – Part i

The Durban July, Africa’s greatest horse-racing event, conjures up images of thoroughbred horses galloping towards the finish line while being observed by fashionista’s and social punters alike. The glamorous social soiree and fashion spectacular were planned for the first Saturday in July, and I was planning on being there.

But wait, I needed more than this. So I decided to hold my own fashion extravaganza, all weekend long. You can’t celebrate fashion on a once off basis, goodness me, where has everyone’s sense of adventure gone? So compiled for your reading pleasure, I present my five looks that saw me through My Durban July Weekend, part 1. Be sure to watch out for parts 2 and 3 for the full experience.

Planes, Trains and Rental Cars

For my travel look I opted for something comfortable, yet with an element of classic style. I used a combination of black and brown tones to style a look that would see me safely through my travels.

Catching the Gautrain airport link, then on to my flight, I knew I would be doing a fair amount of walking, so comfortable foot wear was a must. These Iguana Boots from Jeep in light brown leather really did the trick and look great while continuing the brown theme in the two-toned Stone Harbour jumper I’m wearing.

The jumper can also be zipped up and worn as a polo neck should the weather take a turn for the worst. I love the polo neck as a classical style element and decided to pair it with the on-trend J Exchange puffer jacket in olive green. The contrasting styles give rise to an interesting outfit while the olive green compliments the two-tone browns of the jumper. The colour components were brought together with the black super skinny Guess jeans, which serve as a neutral palette and allow the other outfit elements to shine.

A stickler for detail, I finished off my travel outfit by selecting this Ferrari D50 Silver Round Leather watch. The double stitching on the brown leather strap continues my classic style elements theme and picks up on the boots to complete the look.

Jimmy Choo Man was the fragrance of choice for my travels. This inaugural offering from the fashion house has a powerful freshness set amongst woody, aromatic notes which compliment a refined sense for detail and a rebellious sense of humour. Available at selected Edgars, Red Square, Foschini,Truworths and Stuttafords stores.

The Call of the Sea

Having arrived safely in Durban and dealt with the unpacking, I headed off to the beach. There is nothing like spending some time at the beach, especially for those of us who do not live on the coast (me). I had planned a late afternoon adventure, perfect for sundowners and beach strolling.

This outfit was such fun to put together. Durban being a bit of a shorts and tee kind of town, I wanted something that would fly in the face of convention down here. Again, I wanted to play with contrasting styles with elements of classic pieces in the overall look.

Mixing patterns, I selected a classic red and blue striped skinny tie from Signature together with this blue check shirt from Levi’s. The bold red stripe ensured the tie took its rightful place amongst the contrasting array of patterns in the outfit. The navy deconstructed blazer from Stone Harbour ensured the look remained relaxed and appropriate for beach wear, despite the tie and shirt combination.

Paying homage to the Durban laid-back aesthetic, I paired my outfit with these Havaiana flip flops in dark green. A bit of tongue in cheek, they were perfect for strolling on the beach and even getting my feet wet. They also ensured that the overall look remained less than serious, perfect for a Friday afternoon outing. Rounding off the outfit these grey washed Aedan Slim Fit jeans from Tom Tailor Denim kept the look playful and informal.

My fragrance of choice for this look was Jaguar for Men, with its top notes of orange, lavender, bergamot and grapefruit, it compliments the feel of a leisurely Friday afternoon on the beach. Jaguar for Men is available at Clicks stores.

I finished off this look with my Lacoste black silicone strap watch with green detail (see another look here using this watch). The strap worked well with the overall mood of the outfit I had put together while the green detail on the watch face complimented the Havaiana’s.
