My Monochrome Moment

While recently in Cape Town for SA Menswear Week, I was in somewhat of a Monochrome mood. Well, that, and I had this killer River Island sleeveless, three-quarter length coat that I was just itching to take on a little walk about.

This coat, perfect for summer, had my name written all over it the first time I saw it. It was one of those pieces I was not initially sure how I was going to style, but knew there was something interesting just waiting to be unlocked.

One-two-three and the next thing I had styled a function-appropriate, monochrome look which I was quite taken with

This then begs the question, how should you go about constructing this timeless mens fashion look for yourself? Relax, My Lime Boots is here to guide, lead and impart fashion wisdom your way.

Why Monochrome?

The simplistic nature of monochrome allows for easy style choices; creating a sharp, masculine edge in just about any look. The key element to styling monochrome is to keep your look playful yet contrasting. Also consider varying textures within your look, leather is always a winner, or perhaps a two-toned sweatshirt for a more styled down look.

Monochrome also works well for more formal occasions. Black and white is a classic combination, and steering clear of possibly clashing colours, will ensure your look is kept on-trend.

I decided to keep my look simple yet classical, with contrast in the structure of the coat. Being a summer look paired with a sleeveless coat, created an interest piece that was the highlight of the entire look. To ensure the coat retained its rightful pride of place, the remainder of my outfit remained basic yet within the monochrome theme.

What I’m Wearing

Don’t do yourself the disservice of classifying black and white as uninteresting; up your levels of creativity when styling monochrome. Interesting designs and a clever combination of patterns and textures are sure to result in a look that’s eye catching yet contemporary.
