I have been to Paarl many times in my life.

No, I lie, I have travelled through Paarl many times in my life; my experiences in this town occasionally peppered with outings to the local movie house while on extended work trips to nearby Tulbagh. So, to be honest, I don’t actually know this Wineland town, which harks back to 1687.

Spending a fair amount of time in the Cape Winelands as I do, I decided it was time for me to take in this unknown entity. Paarl has a great variety of accommodation¬†on offer, but The Light House Boutique Suites attracted my attention, mainly for the Hampton’s inspired lifestyle that lies at the very core of this remarkable establishment.

What was formerly a stately family home, was recently redesigned and renovated into a little piece of Hamptons luxury, overlooking the Paarl Valley. Hosted by Darrol and Hendrik, The Light House is well situated within the Winelands, while still close enough to Cape Town to explore that cosmopolitan city. Darrol and Hendrik hail from the stage, film and fashion industries which meant that my stay had their unique stamp of flair to it.

My Jeeves-To-Hand gentleman’s gentleman, named Razer, continued this hospitable approach, seeming to effortlessly anticipate my every need while on the property. A glass of champagne as I explored the grounds, Razer had the bubbly ready; perhaps some time at the pool, Razer ensured the cushions were in place. Meal suggestions and yet another coffee in the mornings, Razer obliged.

The eclectically-appointed interior has been designed with attention to every last detail, making The Light House a haven for the discerning traveller who enjoys partaking in the finer offerings of life. As I ambled around the house, equipped with five luxury suites and names ranging from Mayfair to Afro-Chic and Bedford Manor, I encountered South African works of art and bespoke furniture amongst interesting objet¬†d’art.

This design ethos extends to each of the suites and I was hosted in the honeymoon suite, Bedford Manor, a luxuriously appointed space which enticed me to wind down while taking in the magnificent views and somewhat slower pace of life.

My first night at The Light House I had the entire house to myself. While sitting down to supper, I heard that Hendrik was playing one of my all-time favourite jazz pieces from Shelly Manne; a live recording from The Black Hawk in New York in the 1950’s. Needless to say, I took full advantage of my hosts’ cordiality, upping the volume and having the time of my life. Right in the heart of the Paarl Valley.

A massive My Lime Boots thank you to all at The Light House Boutique Suites for their warm hospitality, kind words and hosting me while I played #TouristInYourCity in the lovely town of Paarl.
