Lazy Days And Lawn Blankets
Last Sunday saw me head on over to Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa with my friend Joti, for a picnic on the lawns of this magnificent establishment. The picnic was held to celebrate the launch of the summer season in which Fairlawns hosts a picnic on the last Sunday of each month. The Fairlawns hallmark of attention to detail combined with opulent flair, ensured that my picnic experience was first class.
Fairlawns, located in the heart of Sandton, is a chic, upscale boutique hotel with a proud South African heritage. Previously a private luxury residence, the property has been transformed into a stylish hotel infused with an air of eclectic sophistication. It is both a home away from home for locals as well as a destination of choice for some of the worlds most vibrant personalities.
The invitation called for “classic picnic attire” and in my book that includes a bowtie and Panama hat. I am so enjoying wearing my dusty pink blazer these days, which I found at Edgars, which worked well with my Dandy AF bowtie. Other guests had also taken time to dress in the style, which made for a great afternoon of people watching from our pod next to the pool.
The food catered to just about every culinary taste with everything from fine cheeses to sushi and paella. And it kept on coming, served throughout the afternoon by the welcoming staff who tended to our every need. Perrier Jouet champaign was on hand to ensure we remained well hydrated despite the overhead African sun.
Dessert was an equally lavish affair with a multitude interesting Cupcakes In Jars on offer. I opted for the Oreo version but could have occupied myself for an indecent length of time trying the other variants. Entertainment was provided by the trio Night Society. Do yourself a favour and check them out (see their cover of Adele’s “Make You Feel My Love” here), their performance was an experience all in itself and made for the perfect accompaniment to this classic picnic experience. Other entertainment was also on offer alongside the pool, for those wishing to partake in a little Sunday afternoon chess.
I could not have imagined a more enjoyable way to spend my Sunday afternoon, all boxes were ticked – good food, fine champaign, excellent entertainment and great company all in the grounds of a true Joburg gem. If there is one thing you have to do this summer season, it’s a picnic at Fairlawns.
A limited number of picnic opportunities will be available, so be sure to call the folks at Fairlawns on +27 11 808 7300 to secure your spot.
