MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2018
Mobile World Congress, or to those in the know, MWC and in this incarnation #MWC2018, is a trade show which sees the who’s who of the mobile phone, tablet and other related digital devices market come together in Barcelona. Probably the biggest mobile phone show in the world, it is also the launching ground of more specialist innovations, such as flexible displays, state-of-the-art mobile chipsets, next-generation artificial intelligence solutions and 5G demonstrations, according to Trusted Reviews.
I trust that last sentence means something to you, personally, I just know how to operate my mobile device.
If you are a regular reader of my blog posts and social media, you will know that last year I established a new love affair with Nokia, who is forging a way in this rather competitive space with a fresh offering peppered with a good dose of nostalgia. Remember the relaunch of the iconic Nokia 3310 last year?
So it was with a rather heightened sense of interest that I watched the proceedings at #MWC2018 this week, to see what the brand would entice us with this year. Let me wrap it up for you, and reveal what memory lane we will be walking down with Nokia this year; did someone say the banana phone?
Nokia 8 Sirocco
This update on the current Nokia 8 (see my recent post about this phone) combines elegant design and compact style and delivers powerful features such as enhanced Dual-Sight, Zeiss optics and improved acoustics thanks to Nokia spatial audio.
I’m particularly keen to try out the ultra-sensitive wide angle main camera for improved low-light shooting as well as the 5.5-inch display and moulded body curves. Nokia claims that the phone will be more secure in my hand thanks to the improved grip given by the dual diamond-polished stainless steel frame. Awesome updates to a phone that I am already loving on a daily basis and use to create much of the social media content I share with you.
Nokia 7 Plus
Dubbed the flagship hero for everyone, the updated Nokia 7 is made for creators to deliver stunning content. Boasting enhanced Dual-Sight, dual rear sensors with Zeiss optics combined with an ultra-sensitive 12MP wide-angle primary camera for excellent performance in both low-light and extra bright conditions and a secondary 13MP camera that delivers 2x optical zoom for when things being snapped are just a bit too far off.
This enhanced offering has been optimised to extract every bit of juice from the already powerful 3800 mAh battery, delivering an amazing 2-day battery life. The 6-inch Full HD+ display makes the Nokia 7 Plus perfect for browsing, social media consumption, gaming and entertainment with more content in the same width as a traditional 5.5-inch display device. Win indeed!
New Nokia 6
The Nokia 6 was a huge success both here in South Africa and internationally, the New Nokia 6 promises even more powerful performance and great new features in a more compact, durable body. Over 60% faster than its predecessor, it now offers enhanced Dual-Sight, Zeiss optics, USB-C fast-charging, a more compact screen-to-body ratio, Nokia spatial audio and pure, secure and up-to-date Android Oreo™.
Durability is the name of the game and the Nokia 6 achieves this thanks to its unibody, made from a solid block of 6000 series aluminium, with an 11-hour two-tone anodising and polishing process. Let life just try…
The Nokia 1 is a breakthrough in accessible technology, delivering smartphone essentials backed by Nokia quality. Giving more people access to technology, it comes with Android Oreo™ Go edition, a version of Android optimized for devices with 1GB RAM or less, with full access to the Google Play Store so you can find all your favourite apps from WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram to mobile banking.
Featuring the iconic Nokia smile in a fresh new package, you can give your Nokia 1 a makeover thanks to the popular Xpress-on covers, available in a range of vibrant colours, which currently doesn’t include My Lime Boots Green, but I’m working on them!
Ready For Memory Lane – Nokia 8110 (aka The Banana Phone)
Reloading the legendary Nokia 8110, this 4G feature phone comes complete with the iconic curved slider design. Giving you the chance to switch off, have fun and relax with the knowledge that all your smartphone essentials are there when you need them. Sold, I want one!
The Nokia 8110 features intuitive tactile mechanics, with slide to answer and end calls, as well as an addictive helicopter style spin on its axis. And yes, it comes with a revamped version of Snake. Just because. The phone delivers crystal-clear VoLTE calling and is perfect for anyone who wants an iconic 4G feature phone or a companion phone. Perfect fashion accessory I say.
What I like about all Nokia phones is that they come with no unnecessary UI changes or hidden processes that would eat up battery life or slow them down, which means that I can enjoy my new device for longer. Each of the new phones comes with a limited number of pre-installed apps so that you’ll get more storage space and runs pure, secure, always up to date Android. Winner in my book!
All these new additions to the Nokia range will be available between April and May 2018, let me know which is your favourite!
