It’s a Friday morning and my plane arrives to the welcome of a wet, drizzly Cape Town. I’m in town for the inaugural Sun Met celebrated with Mumm, as a guest of Sun International, looking forward to this prestigious equestrian event. The Sun Met is the largest annual outdoor social event in Cape Town dating back to the early 1800’s and is today as much about couture fashion and social networking, as it is about the main race.

In fact, I’m rather chuffed with myself, having packed everything for this trip into just one suitcase. Jeepers, who would have thought? I felt so naked walking into the airport with just one bag, but hey I’m here and the weekend is off to a great start! A quick unpack at my hotel in Claremont and it’s off to Cavendish Square I go. My outfit for race day is ready, except I don’t yet have the shoe’s I need to complete the look.

The Sun Met theme this year is Decades Of Glamour celebrating fashion from the 1920’s to current. I decided to go with a slightly updated take on Leonardo DiCaprio’s Gatsby. Best I get those shoes otherwise I’m just going to look silly.

Late Friday afternoon sees me pulling together an outfit to go and meet friends in Camps Bay for sundowners. I love Friday afternoon drinks, to me, they are a toast to a fabulous weekend to come; a time to shift priorities, if only for a while, and engage in some stimulating conversation with good people.

I was kept company on my Sun Met weekend by the new generation Mazda3. Its sporting agility and smooth ride on the windy roads around Llandudno and Camps Bay had me smiling from ear to ear and wanting more! Approaching Camps Bay I pulled over, taking advantage of the great views which provided an incredible backdrop to showcase my outfit.

What I Wore

I decided on a pair of washed out black denim’s from River Island, setting the tone as casual yet with a sense of dress and occasion. I paired these with an old favourite from last year, my pink blazer from Edgars. This item continues to attract comments whenever I wear it.

To ensure the overall look was appropriate for a beach setting, a setting sun and cocktails, I wore a white print tee from River Island. I pin-rolled the denim’s in a somewhat loose manner, giving the effect of wearing joggers but just that little more dressy. The pin-rolled denim’s sat just above my ankles, subtly drawing the casual on-lookers eye to the dark brown Benjy wedge sole shoes from Dune London. The attention to detail in the blue laces is precisely what I look for in a pair of shoes and what keeps me a firm Dune London fan.

The palette of colours in this outfit worked so well, with appropriate accent shades in just the right pieces. I was well turned out for an early evening session of conversation, contemplation and good company!

Bring On The Accessories

You’ve heard it before and I’ll say it again, an outfit is made in the details and accessories are your friends in this regard.

Complementing the overall look I had put together, I decided on this Dogfight Wingman chrono watch in navy blue. The Dogfight brand harks back to those courageous pilots who wagered battles in the sky during both World Wars, true flying aces with genuine gentle courage. The watch is a statement piece in its square design which complimented my outfit rather than detracting from it. The detail on the watch made it a definite conversation piece.

To ensure I was on my A-game, I selected John Varvatos Artisan Acqua as my fragrance of choice for the evening. New to the South African market, John Varvatos is a collection of fine fragrances inspired by menswear designer, John Varvatos. Artisan Acqua is an exhilarating citrus based fragrance which creates a lasting impression. The woody, slightly musky fragrance, was the perfect accompaniment to my balmy Friday afternoon cocktail session. The full range of five variants is available exclusively at Edgars.

In keeping with products harking back to years gone by, I decided to try this new Hairgum which came my way recently. Having rather fine hair, I usually stick to just one brand with proven results but was rather pleasantly surprised by the strong variant in the range. Enriched with beeswax, it held my hair without making it look sticky. It’s extra-glossy look is ideal for short and crew cuts and was certainly a match for the Cape Winds. I also rather enjoy the fact that this is a professional hair wax, but in an old-school shoe polish tin.

All in all, a well-appointed outfit complete with accessories and grooming products, which made for a rather pleasant evening!
